MCA 40mm or 50mm ?
Hi, I have a EVO 8 tarmac car and was looking at Murray's non canister suspension. Which would be better 40 or 50mm for Tarmac stuff ? is the extra unsprung weight worth the increase in size ?

1) first question why would you go non cannister ?
2) whats your BMI eg if you and you co driver resemble Biafran refugees and the car is at absolute minimum weight then you might actually worry about the 2 or 300 grams difference otherwise have a nice big crap before the event every morning

Hey Ric
1) Non canister because of the 3k difference in price
2) I think the weight is not an issue to be honest

Personally I'd sell my left one or what ever I had to do and go cannister then get somebody who knows their stuff to do setup for you unless you can do it confidently yourself Southy (msgofast on here is one, Murray himself is another, Rick Bates also right up there) learn what the various adjustments mean in terms of handling changes so once you get confident in the feel of the car you can tweak it and believe me a little change can make a big difference ( yeah I didn't believe it at first either)
and certainly go the 50mm rollerbearing stuff its like riding in an armchair

Is Murray happy to do non-cannister?
What's the price difference between the smaller and the larger stuff?
The bigger stuff is stronger, stiffer, holds more oil (takes a lot longer stage to overheat the oil, more time between oil changes) and has a better (bigger) valve piston. Weight is pretty much irrelevant - the only real decision is whether the extra initial cost is worth the performance benefit.
If you've got an Evo8, you've already thrown a stack of money at the car, so you should fork out for the big, cannister stuff and be done with it.
This is a really easy decision for me, because I'm not paying for it...
IIRC, Murray doesn't do the 'normal' 40mm or 50mm ODs, its 45 and 55 or something.

I know that if doing gravel like many here or doing long stage Targa events I would go the canister and be done with it, though the budget is shot and the boss will be very unhappy if I spend $8k on "car stuff"
Yes when I had my GC8 Michael gave me some setup tips (had DMS) and it was spot on, he did not know me from a bar of soap, really nice guy.

Yeah in an ideal world where everyone has a bucket load of cash get the remote canister stuff,
But, it sounds like you are like me, and you have the minister of finance deciding how much the rally budget is, so with my EVO i had Murray build the rears with canister and the fronts without,
Reasoning is, Murray can put the canisters on the front at a later date, but the rears are inbuilt and cannot be added later.
So when i find the limits of my driving will warrant the remote canisters on the front or their first service whichever will come first i will get it done.
I would rather spend the extra money on fixing the variable behind the wheel that doesnt work properly.
Ben.

The Cannister has a slow / Fast shoch speed speed adjuster on them, Its not just for better fade resistance.
On the Size thing... Big on the front defenetley. Rear..... small should be ok.

Spot on Ben and I was actually going to ask Murray if the canisters could be post fitted, what diameter did you go ?
And yes even the non canister coil overs would be a waste on my driving skill

ahhh i dont know i will have to go and measure, I think when i asked for a size Murray says he only makes 1 size at the moment, but dont quote me on that it was a year ago
Here is a photo when they arrived, you can see why the EVO rears cant be easily retrofitted.

I asked Murray recently about retrofit canisters front and rear and around $3000 was the answer. Convert old style large diameter spring to small diameter spring around $3000.
The canister adjusters are high speed bump and low speed bump, on the bottom of the strut is bypass.
Champion bloke.
