Heater/Demister Mods...

I have read about people modifying their heaters so they are only on heat & demist with a switch to turn them on. However I have never seen anyone explain how to do it.

I would like to do this to my car but don't know how. Is there anybody that does?

Hi there,

I recently did this. I pulled apart a standard heater, cleaned it all up.

I then removed all the bits that are not required for the foot or dash vent operation. I blanked off the outlets for the floor and dash vents and ensured that all air goes through the demist vents.

I also cut off the excess bits not required like the part that joins to the scuttle plenum (which will be blanked off).

I have yet to reinstall the heater, I need to work on the controls and need access to the current heater to work it all out. I will take some photos and post tomorrow.

Greg

Heater/Demisters

These guys do a 'hotbox' with water plumbing or a 12V electric demister setup. Here is the email they sent me:

"G’day Brad,
We have compact (200mm x 60mm) 12 Volt electric demisters are easily installed. No plumbing required - just wire it in. Perfect for under the dash. Sold in pairs - one for each side of the windscreen. Practical and perfect for Rego. You can purchase a pair of 12 Volt demisters for $85 including postage anywhere in Australia. "

Demister

What I did to mine was gut all the controls - sikaflex all the panels into demist only, removed the variable speed control, removed the water tap (temp control). It now works as a demister only at full speed.

while on the subject - does anyone know where i can get new demister heater bars (those strips of metal) that go across a back window?

thinking there must be somewhere that sells them as a "sticker" or similar? just can't find anything.

I tried that exact one, and gave up it was that useless. I think Mick Gillet also used a similar (if not the same) one and his comment from memory was that you needed to turn it on the day before for it to work properly...

With all that in mind I've only (like last week) taken delivery of 3 heated windscreens to suit GDB Impreza from the UK from this mob:
Heated Windscreens
Very easy to deal with, and the wires in the screen are SO thin you can barely see them. I was expecting them to be like the big chunky rear ones, but they're nothing like that. The box/pallet they send them over in can hold up to 4 screen, so I'd definitely advise buying more than 1 if you want to make it viable buying from over there.

If one was fitted to a rally car, would it be covered by the one windscreen a year fitment policy.

Thanks for the replies. I need it for my rear windscreen, as they cannot be obtained new for my Celica, and the one I have had old tint on it. When i removed the tint (as carefully as possible), the heater elements came off too. There is still tin (or whatever metal) strips on the window, but all the copper is gone.

It will be going on a street car, not my rally car, although it is the same model

Barney - does it work ok for you? or do you need to turn it on the day before like gslrallysport and Mick?

Thanks again for the help

They should work fine on a rear screen. The problems with needing to turn it on the day before are only on the front, due to them being laminated.

They are a pain in the ar$e to install though, and we had the screen out when doing it so can only imagine how hard it would be in the car!!

thanks mrbob, i'll give it a go.
It's only for a rear window in warm lil ole Adelaide that'd only be used 3 times a year if it's lucky.
It's not running on the front window of a rally car blasting thru the freezing forests of NSW or ACT highlands

luckily install won't be a problem, as window is out of the car

I used to run a factory heated screen (it was a V8 supercar part, easily ordered and picked up through your local ford dealer), which was about $400 before fitment. Shannons paid for a replacement screen under that policy when it got damaged while on the trailer.

Sorry mate I live in Airlie Beach and haven't needed a demister for over 3 years so have never used it, best be guided by the others.
