Possible build-up of a Hyundai Excel (Plus what class would it be eligable in?)
Hi there everyone!
I am new in this forum and I need a little advice.
In the next 18 months I am planning on starting rallying using a Hyundai Excel (either a sprint ot twin cam depending what is available at time of purchase)
Here is the question:
I plan on turbocharging the engine to boost the power to an acceptable level to run in rallying, plus giving it the usual treatment during build-up. Also I intend to keep the car close to stock as I intend to make the car a daily driver (Trying to keep the dash and it's periferals eg. radio, climate control, safety equipment etc.) as well as a Duel purpose Rally car (dirt and tarmac (the latter because I plan on running in at least one Targa Tasmainia in my lifetime)) And I understand that I would have to make appropriate adjustments prior to a rally.
Also what class would it be eligable to run in and is it a nationally recognized class (Meaning would the class correspond with ARCcom or FIA APAC class (F2 or 1600)) with these slight modifications.
With the turbocharging, would it make the car ineligable for any class that it was eligable for prior to the task? If so what is the appropriate class so I can run it?
Hopefully you guys can give me the right advice.
Thanks,
Maccas Well

Re: Possible build-up of a Hyundai Excel (Plus what class would it be eligable in?)
Good to see another interested person. Rallying is fantastic fun, but there's a couple of things that you've mentioned that need to be talked about...
The links that Karl has provided are a good start, and you should look there. But:
a) - as Karl mentioned, modifications are limited depending on the vehicle that you start with. The rules are a bit strange in determining what is a llowable and what isn't, but on a Hyundai, a turbo isn't going to be an option. You are pretty much stuck with the engine block and head that the car came out of the factory with. Although the Super1600 regs give you some more scope for modification.
b) - If you're building a new car, the regulations for the roll-cage that you'd have to put in would pretty much exclude your car from being a daily driver. A competitive rally car is a pretty specialized machine, and you probably wouldn't want to commute in it anyway.
It sounds like you need to come along to a few rallies, and see what really happens, and get an understanding of the rules. You'll be vaunted as an Aussie Legend if you come along and officiate or help out on a service crew, and both give you close access to people to be able to discuss your ideas.
Welcome, and look forward to seeing you around...

Carlos Casmiri (Sportsclassic / .com.au) is getting into the Excels. He may be a good bloke to speak to as he has a heap he's wrecking and is a rally bloke. There is also a HRS, Mark Thompson connection through Carlos, so the background knowledge on the Hyundai's will be fairly high.
Mark's Hyundai is off it's head... just like Mark
At Sportsclassic there is a nice pink one with a cage in it that he is getting ready for his son Adam to rally- it's looking real good too. (except for the pink which I'm sure Adam loves!!!)
The Hyundai series may turn out to be a good thing.

Dusty Rhodes, Wayne Bell, and a couple of other West Australians.
Not sure when the series goes live, think 2006 is the real start point.
As said before, download the series regs and have a look and see if it is for you. Also go and have a look at some other rallies and go from there. There are a few cars out there for sale. One very nice EVO2 in green was for sale last night at the right price.....

excel series regs
The NSW Regs as presented to the rally panel (Now approved I think) are attached.
We'd welcome any feedback and constructive comment as they are not cast in concrete as yet.
As for the car building progress, the first car is almost ready to go and is nearly ready for rally rego.
So it should not be long until it hits the forests.
The plan is to run at the same rounds as Gemini's in '05 and if there are a sufficient number of registered competitors, it will be a NSW series.

I'm sure the Gemini Series will continue for a few years, there are still about 15 Gemini series cars out there. I think there were 11 entries at Oberon and 9 for Ulla'
Initial estimates are around $10-12K, it really depends on how much you get your base car for and what bits- such as terratrip, intercom, lights, seats etc you already have.
The new 2004 roll cage rules also don't help $$$ much.
Whilst the twin cam is the best performance choice, an older single cam will be less expensive and will do to get started.
You can do an engine transplant pretty easily & cheaply down the track a bit.

The excel is a shopping car.... so expect some issues, that way you will be ahead if they don't eventuate.
