Engineering shop/machinist needed
I'm after an engineering shop or machinist to make me some brake caliper pistons. The pistons are available new but cost $20 each. I need 8. Can anyone recommend someone to do the work?

Good luck!
I doubt you'll find anyone to make them for less than that. I've got a mate who has an engineering shop, but I reckon for a batch of 8 you'd probably be looking at around that price anyway... If not, then proably more...

By the time you pay for material and set up time - I'd say you'd be looking at close to double that - most machinists I know charge about $60 an hour.
You could try Ty Hooper or Rob Mules both of them have Lathes.

At $20 there a bargain, if you get them made you'll have to get them ground or chromed or something as well.

I agree, you will pay more than that for me to do that work, for example.
The only advantage I could offer is to make them out of superior material.
The reason is that to make the pistons we need to start with solid bar (probably stainless steel). This material is tough and I guess it would take about 3 hours to machine them. Material cost is about $40 labour $180.

I put it off to do the motor, as the world of Mini suppliers was changing and the pistons weren't available.
Stuff is now cheaper, and more available despite there being a reduction in the number of suppliers and the stop to Mini production.
BTW, is the love connection so close now that Guy has to post from Fro's place? Or have the entire Datto crew morphed into one Datsun/FRO-Sport/YRALLY/Farm/Finnish mass currently posting from FRO-Sport headquarters?

The power of Datsun brings us together...
When one of the brethren suffers misfortune (such as horrbily bent vavle due to sever over-revving and complete lack of mechanical sympathy), it's customary for another member of the Datsun Love Connection to come over and throw many jibes at said person. Then drink all the beer, and leave.
Such is the way of Datsun.
Amen

Mini Parts
Marc,
I don't suppose I can interest you in a set of 1293 forged pistons, a 12G940 head and a 1275 spider cam?

Thanks Neil, I'm interested, but I've got a motor pretty much ready to go at the moment.
I do have a spare 1275 block though, so a spare motor might be possible. Why don't you email me with specs and prices for the forgies and the head.
What spec is the cam? If it is anything over 280deg duration I'm interested. If it is a 640 or something from Leyland tuning, I'm very interested.
