Datsun Alternators?

Hi,

My 180b is not happy with the spotlights & all accessiories running, with the volts dropping to around 10v. Any ideas on an appropriate alternator?

1) I need something around the 85A mark, would prefer something closer to 100A.
2) I'd also like one that bolts straight in, and dosent require many wiring changes.....
3) Would also prefer something that still charges at idle.

I've seen references to XE/XF/AU Falcon, Bosch specials & Commodore units?

Please let me know what your running on your Datsun!

I used a vs commodore Bosch alternator, removed all the internals and fitted them into a standard Bosch datto housing, from memory it was 100 or 120a.
There is probably an easier option but that’s what I did.
Hope that helps,
Mick

I have done the same thing. I have made up two Commo/Datto hybrids so I can change to the spare at service. In four seasons I have had cause to change (pre-emptively) to the spare three times. They give plenty of warning when they start to fail. The down side is they don't charge well at low RPM, so for them to work efficiently on transport stages you need to keep the standard pulley on them. Which in turn means they have to be put together well enough to tolerate 7000+ RPM engine speeds

Whats involved in makaing a datto/commodore alt?

Do the commodore windings swap straight in, or are there other mods required?

Woolly got a bit of a rap
Almost all later model Bosch alternators have the same critical engineering points - the bearing sizes, the outside diameter if the field coils, The armature length, and the regulator/rectifier mount positions. The main difference is the outside, where one case may have different mounts (to suit a Holden, or a Ford, or a Datsun/Nissan). Be wary, however, of units that have a sticker on the back that indicates they have been built in UK. These units are not repairable, as there are no bits available here.
