Simple inlet air flow analysis
I think some of the more geeky members (I know I'm not the only one ), might find this interesting.

That is the simple bit, once you start tuning the inlet for inlet harmonics and helmholtz resonance inside the airbox, things start to get weird/cool ...

That was a bloody good read. Thanks Ben!
I'd just like to point out that I am not a geek.

Ditto.
Thanks Ben... certainly gives me a little more to think about with my "airbox" design. Don't suppose you've got CFD capabilities in the lab, Frinkmeister?

One thing to bear in mind is that the 18% improvement ws only for the trumpet itself.
If a trumpet without the plate already flows as much air as your engine needs, you're not going to see much of a difference.
This is where you need somebody with a flowbench......

Pretty colours!
It gels well with David Vizards old work on no nothing vs straight pipe vs bell mouthed trumpet design.
I think it went... (snipped from an old post on anothor forum or two)... the variation in power over a carb with no ram tube can be a loss of 6.7% for a bad tube to a gain of 5.8% for a good one. Generally, a stock weber ram tube is pretty good, gaining around 5% over not having a tube at all.
I then made some rash baseless statement like...
In a car as suceptible to air flow problems as a big gulping rotor, the results could be even more pronounced as air velocity gets very high.
I don't have the book handy buy I dont recall if vizard tested the flat around the trumpt lip.
I do know that Lynx used to make a IDA weber filter assembly that fitted over the trumpet like the flat surface depicted and would be a "cheap" way of achieving a like result. If you can find one these days...

Cool. That dude needs to get the same tool on to modelling air flow in a restrictor.

Interesting read. It's appears to be very similar (but in reverse) of modern audio speaker design.. with the whole flush mounting more effective, and tappered vents etc.

The trumpets on Boss Hair's Trueno started off life as subwoofer ports...
