O.K. Lucas Pad Reports.

The felt good on the road bedding them in, but they just could not handle the heat in Greenhills (they most definatly got out of the kitchen), the became soft a mushy, and in the end did nothing.

However, they seemed to come back on for the rest of the event (well sort of, they weren't perfect but were better than the first stage). We also re bleed the brakes again at service so that could have something to do with it.

I am undecided what I am going to do about leaving them in or not, but certainly not that keen on doing the shire stages at bega with brakes that will go off when the heat up.

Kagan, it really sounds like they're best off in the service truck as spares... Now go and buy some DS2500s or 3000s...

Yeah I know, I think the 2500's are the way to go for me, I was just hoping I could get away with some cheaper pads, but apparently not. Now to find out the extent of Damage to the gearbox

So all I need now is better brake fluid, better brakes, a new gearbox, new tires, and we should be set for Bega... now to find that second job!!!

... and that's what we've all said right from the beginning!!! You've got to super heat them to re-scorch them to 950.... Road bedding them in doesn't count, you've got to get them to the point where your discs are glowing and you can smell them, then you'll NEVER ever loose brakes again...

Both myself and global (and maybe matt durand, not sure) run EXACTLY the same braking hardware in our charades as you do, and both of us use Lucas Pads, and once you get past the initial bed in, you'll never ever notice it again...

Like you said, once you lost brakes once you were fine, and that's what we all said all along.... dude, do another event, them throw crap at them...

I chose Race brakes RB74's in the end - and I'm very happy with them.

No I said they came back on a bit after we re-bleed the brakes, they were still over heating though and were not the most confidence building. Coming down the hill into the speccy point at east west I thought I was going straight on for a while, the car would not pull up, and there was no rear bias what so ever. I ended up having to pull the handbrake to get around and it was only a 90 degree corner... the car should be able to turn itself in for those types of corners simply from the foot brake.

If thats what it is doing in the tight twisty and relatively slower speeds of Canberra, what are they going to do on the Shire roads of bega when pulling it up from 160+ kph constently???

Lucky I don't have to worry quite as much about the speed as the stock 76kw pulling the overweight 1000kg plus doesn't equate to much speed, but I guess the breaks still have to deal with the weight.

I would have thought Bega to have less impact on brakes as better airflow and not so tight and twisty and downhill would allow the brakes to keep cool.

And we still have bloody drums on the back.

Robo, that was my first thought to, the fact you are off them that they would cool down, but I found they were at there worse trying to pull the Charade up in greenhills which had lots of flat in fourth strights to resonably tight corners. It was when you were on the breaks for a long time they were really bad and yeah the consitant high speeds a bega might just take it right out of them... They would probably be O.K., but not keen to find out the hard way that is for sure!!!

This is just to show what not to do!!!!.
At the Bay this year after Western Distributor we had 2 stages to go and the front right outer pad was metal on metal. We did the last two stages (Somehow??) and they were scraping rather bad by the end, this is why.

Also in the photo is our thermostat that popped the main pin through the top. This is what made our engine rather hot.

For Ulladulla to avoid my previous dodgy brake pad usage (what ever I had, unknown brands/types, standard pads, pads off the trailer, what ever) I chose to go out and for a change spend some money on the poor little datto's brakes.
With a few supply issues the only last minute pad I could get was Bendix Advance $66.
I must say they have been the best I have used, and even on Western Distributor pulling up at the time control I had not once experienced any fade over the stage.
Bendix Advance=Happy Jan

Lucas fire starters

I thought I'd try the lucas pads at Ulladulla because they were cheap & available at short notice - I have been using SBS carbon ceramic & they have been fantastic.

by 2km's into stage 1 I could smell the pads burning & when we got to the end of SS1 smoke was pouring out of the front brakes! SS2 I tried to conserve them but still heaps of smoke & smell. Over the rest of the event the smoke & smell gradually got less but the braking performance was not 100%.

I have just pulled the pads out of the car & found (as per attached photos) that the pads have delaminated from the backing plate. So it's back to the SBS pads as the Lucas one's may be cheap but they are only good for firelighters!
