Dyno Tuning - AutoTech

Whether your car is Fuel injected- , or Carbie- fed and in need of a tune-up or re-map, get Peter Dowling to wack it on the rollers at Autotech in Fyshwick: (02) 6280 5061. They are located between Powatone Exhaust and Joe's Motorcycles.

Peter and Jake have tuned some of the high horsepower cars found at Summernats, (i.e. red Mazda 808 20B), Porsche Cup cars and just about everything else in between.

Just to add to Mark's comments, Peter has always been very helpful, freely offers his advice, and knows what he's doing. He's not the cheapest guy around, but his in one of the few workshops that I would trust with my car.

Pete's good. Done a few cars with Megasquirt there, he's very helpful and reasonably priced. Very flexible and happy to listen and to teach - (ie not just the usual clown who thinks they know all and has the just-advance-it-'till-it-pings-and-she'll-be-right attitude).

His O2 meter isn't very well calibrated (its only the 4 wire narrowband LSM-11 sensor type) and reads richer than either of two wideband meters I've had there (about 1/2 an AFR at around 12.5:1), so be a bit conservative.

That's odd Marc, I've seen standard cars sitting on exactly 14.7:1 at idle with his wideband..

Have you had your WBO2 there to compare? This is two different sensors and WB units both doing saying the same thing.

Given that his sensor is the LSM one I'd expect it to be fine at stoich but be less accurate the further away you were. I didn't notice the problem at stoich, but didn't spend much time there, we were working mainly on max torque stuff around 12.5 - 13.3.

I'd like to get my wideband near some known gas concentrations to absolutely confirm. I know in my road cars with factory O2 doing closed loop cruising, that my WB02 read stoich correctly.

Fair enough, I've often wondered about calibrating them, but, never enough to do anything about it.

I've never had a chance to compare it to mine.

Peter has transformed the mighty Stanza donk (2.2L), despite being constrained by a Haltech that came off the ark.

I thought it was fairly healthy when I delivered it to him (same tune as when I ran it in the Alpine), but it's now "light the blue touch paper" time.

Agreed- he had the gemini for a day- rekitted the carbs and worked out we had some other issues while on the dyno.. Didn't mind me standing around in the dyno room asking dumb questions either, and I asked plenty!..

Got our issues sorted thanks to Banyard and TTS, then went back for a tune, and lo and behold the thing runs like a dream...

Easy to deal with, great at explaining stuff to a dumbarse like me....

definately will go back if I ever need a retune if we go for the big cam...

Bosch LSM-11 is not a narrow band sensor. Do not believe the hype you read.
Bosch give the specification of 0.8-1.6 lambda in their own technical manual.

(Bosch Engine Management Components 2003/2004 edition)

These sensors are a consumable and should be regularly replaced. Thet also require carefull heater current management for best results.

The best meter for this sensor that I have seen is the Autronic unit.

Just wanted to bump this thread to give Pete at Autotech Fyshwick a bit of a plug.
The CEO of Club Munyard and I spent the day there yesterday with the old datto and Peter was extremely helpful and "rally friendly".
Nothing was too much trouble, and his rates are very reasonable.

Whether you think your car needs it or not, go and have a play on Peter's dyno. You might be surprised at what he can do for you...

Some other clubs I've seen have run "Dyno Days" where they rent the dyno for the entire day, splitting the cost between a bunch of people and giving each person 2-3 runs just for baselining.

I'd be in for something like that just to see what the Suby and the Pug are putting down and make sur eeverything is mostly hunky dory.
