1990 Rally Australia
1990 Rally Australia
In 1990 My wife and I went over to have a look at the event. I was going to film but it was very difficult to get the correct media accreditation. So I thought I would go over and just have a look for a change and not film.(But I took my camera anyway). On day one of the event we had agreed to do a road closure, you know turn up at the start of the stage and then drive through and then given a corner to protect. Well what do you know Didier Auriol comes down the road in the Lancia and rolls right in front of me. Apart from the excitement of the crash it also changed our fortunes on the event. We did a deal with channel 9, they got to use my footage and my wife and I got level 1 FIA media accreditation. This gave me full access to all points on the stages and the video is here to prove it.
Major points Tommi Makinen in car 22 the Group N VR4.
Carlos Sainz in the fat sounding GT4
Possum and Ross fighting it out for ANZAC honours.
Erwin Weber in the Supercharged Golf
Enjoy
Regards Michael

Me too. Did a few road closures and a spectator marshal. Only one I've ever been to though.

Mark
The cars made good sounds with no restrictors and no rev limits.

Sure did. My favourite was Monster's Suzuki Swift, boy did that rev hard.
Dunk and Poss had a good battle going there, but I think Poss won out in the end when Dunk had power steering failure. Dunk had some fun stirring up some of the Asian competitors too. They were worried about the roos. His advice to them, "If you hit one, whatever you do, don't stop. They always hunt in pairs."
Carlos was spectacular as ever, and Kankanen smooth and fast.

The Celica Sainz is driving is the actually car Dad ended up with... if he still owned it now it wouldn't be eligible for classics, but I could use it in the clubman series (God only knows what the thing would be worth now?)
Griffo is right. These are classic cars for many of us.

I remember some more points about that car. Standing behind the GT4 waiting to go on the start ramp, it was idling in the line of cars, I can remember as it struggled to run on the cams at idle, the pulse waves from the exhaust made me blink in time with the beat. Bloody fantastic, because my wife just reminded me of it and if she can remember, it must have made an impression.
